These materials are usually sourced from ocean cleanup initiatives and partnerships with environmental organizations. Once collected, the plastics are meticulously sorted to remove non-plastic contaminants like rocks, seaweed, and shells. This step ensures that only clean and suitable plastics are used for the next stages of processing. The materials are then thoroughly cleaned and washed to eliminate salt, sand, and other marine residue.
After cleaning, the plastic waste is shredded into small pieces or flakes. These small plastic pieces can be further processed into a usable form. Shredding increases the surface area, making it easier to melt and process the plastics. The shredded plastic flakes are then melted down. The melted plastic is filtered to remove any remaining impurities or non-plastic particles. This process transforms the plastic into a more refined state.
The filtered plastic is extruded into thin filaments, resulting in a material known as recycled polyester or recycled nylon, depending on the type of plastic used. This process involves heating the plastic to its melting point and reshaping it into the desired form. The extruded material is spun into yarn, which becomes the primary raw material for fabric production.
